Drawing Prompts

1 min read

I've been wanting to draw more lately and of course that means I've also been wanting more drawing ideas. I've found some great places for drawing prompts; the Sketch A Day App is really awesome! But I wasn't able to find any that suited me on Twitter & Instagram, so I decided to make my own! You can find daily drawing promps @DailyPromptDraw on Twitter & Instagram!

First off I should say that I'm not looking for adopts. I just saw this going around and did mine for the fun of it. Maybe I'll use this for its intended purpose in the future. BUT! I am always looking for awesome art to look at and get hope and inspiration from, SO if you know of some cool designs or artists that make this type of stuff I would LOVE to see them!!

General Feel

Dos
  • characters that feel down to earth in some sense but also feel a little bit not of this world
  • modern-ness especially mythical stuff recontextualized into the feel of everyday modern life. Think mermaids wearing tee-shirts.
  • sea and sky and nature motifs

Don'ts
  • any type of warrior, assassin, or other combatant trained to kill.
  • epic heroes or epic villains
  • characters with a historical vibe of an era before the 1900's
  • any sexualized content

Species Preferences

  • HUMANOIDS!
  • humanoid monsters (especially ones that are kinda weird, uncanny, or even slightly eerie, but still sympathetic and/or relatable. Or ones that are beautiful and/or intriguing, but ill-intentioned in one way or another)
  • Ghosts (again, especially ones that are weird, but sympathetic, or ones that are appealing but ill-intentioned)
  • simple cyborgs and androids
  • various types of shapeshifters
  • typical part-human species, especially merpeople and harpies. But, again, I like them brought down to earth; mermaids in tee-shirts.
  • also just humans with a few animal features in general: horns or claws or a tail or whatever
  • various types of tinies
  • fairies
  • plain old humans as long as they're endearing and/or interesting
  • spirit beings that manifest in humanoid "bodies" made of natural substances...Some may refer to this sort of thing as "elementals" but I find that that term tends to mean different things to different people. If someone could give me a better way to refer to them that would be great.

Don'ts
  • furries/anthros/ferals. That stuff.
  • animal characters that don't have a human or mostly human form
  • big hairy or scaly or metal beastly things
  • any species that is designed to be about sexualization

Body Type Preferences

Dos
  • Anything that works! I like pretty much any body type that works for the character!

Don'ts
  • body types that aren't/don't feel natural (ie gigantic bodybuilder muscles, women with unnaturally large breasts or characters that are otherwise sexually exaggerated, grotesquely and unkindly exaggerated fat or flab. [On the later two: give people some respect, for heaven's sake!])

Color Preferences

Dos
  • ANALOGOUS COLOR SCHEMES
  • simple color schemes
  • schemes with mostly neutral colors and one saturated color that pops
  • bright colors
  • soft colors

Don'ts
  • garish colors
  • clashing colors
  • complicated color schemes

Marking Preferences

Dos
  • depends what you mean by markings? I'm not super into, like, animal markings or tattoos... Freckles are fine *shrug*
  • just simple stuff

Don'ts
  • anything complicated

Accessory/wardrobe Preferences

Dos
  • TEE-SHIRTS, HOODIES, JACKETS, AND SWEATERS!
  • flowy or baggy stuff can be fun
  • 3/4 sleeve lengths or rolled up sleeves
  • solid colors and simple patterns (stripes etc.)
  • casual hats
  • simple jewelry or accessories
  • bags, backpacks, satchels, and purses
  • flowers and nature stuff

Don'ts
  • anything gaudy or complicated
  • historical formal wear
  • excessive frills or lots of jewelry
  • I'm usually not into hair that's been died unnatural colors but sometimes there are exceptions
  • Weapons
  • anything that is revealing and/or sexualizes the character.

Miscellaneous Preferences

Dos
  • body horror type stuff that is interesting, or maybe even eerie but NOT gross.
  • smart aleck teens and teens in general, though I'm certainly not against having a wide spread of ages!
  • characters with disabilities are cool
  • characters with interesting hobbies
  • characters with normal careers

Don'ts
  • stuff that's overly dramatic (unless it's very on purpose to be funny)
  • stuff that's overly glamorous (again, unless it's to be funny)
  • anything fetish-y

Tag I'm it

4 min read
I was tagged by the lovely solktaalik (thank you for thinking of me, Daffodil!) And you should all go check her out cause she ROCKS!

-Rules-

-You have to post all the rules

-Answer 12 questions you have been asked and then create 12 questions for people you tagged

-Choose 12 people

-Actually, tag these people

-Can't say you don't do tags

Rules I am adding:

If I tag you you can ignore the last three rules ;)

My answers:

1. Do you listen to classical music? If so, what is your favorite composer?
Unfortunately I don't really. I like it when I hear it, but I've never sought it out. I listen to soundtracks and that's about the closest I get.

2. How many OCs do you have?
Oh goodness. A lot. Around 95? Then half a dozen more that aren't developed enough to actually call characters yet.
You guys don't see them much on here because, even though I'm an artist, the character's look tends to be one of the last things I develope. If you're interested, I'm working on posting more about them over here: thescrapbox.tumblr.com

3. Have you ever heard of the singer/songwriter Julia Pietrucha (i love her so much)?
No, I'll have to look her up!

4. Have you ever drawn yourself?
Yup.

5. Longest book you have ever read?
Gosh, I don't know... I don't read very long books...

6. If you had to live in another country, what would you pick?
Canada. It's so pretty and chill there. I feel like it would be a relaxing place to live.

7. Do you play an instrument?
Nope

8. How much time a day do you spend online?
...too much.

9. Are you taller than me? (I'm 5'3''/160 cm)
I'm 1 inch taller. We're almost the same size!

10. Potatoes or Pasta?
Gah! Hard choice!! I think I'd have to say pasta, but I love potatoes too!

11. Favorite historical time period?
Turn of the century/early 1900s.

12. Have you heard of the play Peer Gynt?
(it has been my obsession lately and it is not popular at all hnnn)
I have heard of it, but I didn't know anything about it, so I cheated and looked it up. It sounds super interesting!

My questions for you:

How are you today?
What is your quest?
What is your favorite color?
What genre(s) of music do you typically listen to / like best?
What is your favorite children's TV show?
What is your favorite Shakespeare play?
What's your element? Water, fire, earth, or air?
What's your favorite webcomic?
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Are you a fan of something that doesn't really have a fandom? What is it?
I'm going to steal Daffodil's question: How many OCs do you have?
What is the thing you most want to tell the world?

I'm tagging...

and I'm tagging :iconsolktaalik: back
Tag! you're it! :D

Rules:
  - The first 10 people to comment will have their deviantart and 3 pieces of art featured, that the journal-writer likes.
  - If your profile is featured, you must create the journal meme on your page
  - If your profile is featured, you must have the person which featured you as your first profile slot

(I'm going to change things a little bit because I know that I often don't like participating in things with strings attached. I'd love to feature you if you're one of the first ten to comment and you don't have to do your own journal if it's not your thing, no pressure.)

Sooooo...I was a little late coming back to this, and when I did there were 14 comments and I really wanted to feature everyone!...So I broke the rules again. But I'm going to stop at 14, cause I can't keep doing this forever. You guys are all wonderful! And like I said earlier, you don't have to participate if you don't want to.

I was just asked by Ryui-chii about artists that inspire me and, as I thought about it, I realized that it has been forever since I last did a shout-out to any of the amazing people whose wonderful work inspires me to keep creating, and it's about time I did so again. There are way to many for me to list them all, but here are some that come to mind in the moment:

I suppose it's not so much a shout-out when the parties in question are...dead...but I would be remissed if I didn't list some of my favorite golden age illustrators, such as Alphonse Mucha, Mary Cicely Barker, Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith , and Maxfield Parrish.

I also am really into the art that comes out of western animation; Glen Keane is definitely a favorite of mine. Ryan Woodward is really great too.

There are a lot of online artists that I love too. I've been really into GreekCeltic lately. I also really love the drawings of Natello, Ketan Patel (ketansketches.tumblr.com/), Simone Grunewald (schmoesi.tumblr.com/), and Nobody. Nobody's work is brilliant and beautiful; I love Nobody's character designs, Anna Cattish's (www.annacattish.com/) fashion inspired illustrations, Nobody's tender scenes, and I look up to my awesome friend Sae in many ways (her amazing drawings are at doodlesonly.tumblr.com/, and her kick-but web comic is pigeoncomic.com/).

So there are a few of the artists that inspire me; I highly recommend you give them a look! I owe them all a huge thank you, they've brought so much good to my life, and they've kept me creating! You guys are amazing!

Thanks for the question Ryui-chii! I hope you don't mind the long answer ;P
